In 1872, Allan Hughan purchased a piece of land at the corner of Sebastapol Street and Turbigo Street, Noumea. This remained the family home and Allan's studio for the duration of their residency in Noumea.
On October 30, 1873, Phoebe and Allan had their fifth daughter and final child, Rose Isabella Hughan, born in Noumea. Phoebe was 44 years old, and Allan 36.
Sadly, on March 24, 1874, little Rose Hughan, aged only 4 ½ months, died. This left a family of three daughters for Allan and Phoebe to raise- Ruth, Minnie and Aline.
In the same year Allan travelled extensively around the island of New Caledonia, taking many photographs.
