This photo has always fascinated me and creeped out my children! There is something ghost-like about the Kanack boy standing eerily next to the well-dressed little Australian girl.
She is Marion Ellen 'Minnie' Hughan, the third child and second surving Hughan daughter, who was almost four years old when she moved to Noumea with her family to reside.
Apart from the age of the child suggesting this photo was taken early in Allan Hughan's photographic career, there is also the simplicity of the backdrop as compared to his later studio backdrops- in this case it is a simple screen, with a very unprofessional gap at the bottom showing a strip of light.
