In 2006 I briefly corresponded with Jacques Valette about Allan Hughan's photos, and he kindly gave the following opinion of the identity of the middle man in the above photo:
"About the photo where Allan is playing chess, I think that the man in the middle is Mr Evenor de Greslan (1839-1900).
He is the future father of Gaston de Greslan and Gaston was the future husband of Marion Hughan, Allan's daughter. I'm not sure 100% but 80%."
Unlike the previous photo of Allan playing chess, this one is stamped on the reverse " W. Dufty & Cie, Noumea N.C. Photographes".
